Computer Training Workshops for IU Community & General Public

Latest in Information Technology

Mrs. Mrinalini Kaura
Principal, Venkateshwar International School, Dwarka, New Delhi

When computer and communications technologies are combined, the result is information technology, or "InfoTech". Information technology is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information.
It is nearly impossible to name a field where its effects have not been felt. From launching of space shuttles to the landing on the planet Mars; the development of Information Technology has been exponential.
Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is a commonly used wireless network in computer systems to enable connection to the Internet or other devices that have Wi-Fi functionalities. Another important use for wireless networks is as an inexpensive and rapid way to be connected to the Internet in countries and regions where the telecom infrastructure is poor or there is a lack of resources, as in most developing countries.

Wi-Fi advantages
Wi-Fi allows local area networks (LANs) to be deployed without wires for client devices, typically reducing the costs of network deployment and expansion. Spaces where cables cannot be run, such as outdoor areas and historical buildings, can host wireless LANs. Wi-Fi has become widespread in corporate infrastructures.

Amateur radio
Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called "hams," use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public service, recreation and self-training. Amateur are able to support their communities with emergency and disaster communications

Home automation
Home automation may designate an emerging practice of increased automation of household appliances and features in residential dwellings, particularly through electronic means that allow for things impracticable, overly expensive or simply not possible in recent past decades. It refers to industrial settings and the automatic or semi-automatic control of lighting, climate doors and windows, and security and surveillance systems.
• Detection of possible intrusion
o sensors of detection of movement
o sensors of magnetic contact of door/window
o sensors of glass breaking
o sensors of pressure changes
• Simulation of presence.
• Detection of fire, gas leaks and water leaks
• Medical alert. Tele assistance.
• Precise and safe closing of blinds.

Robotics
Robotics is the science and technology of robots, and their design, manufacture, and application. Robotics is related to electronics, mechanics, and software.

Nanorobotics
Nanorobotics is the technology of creating machines or robots at or close to the microscopic scale of a nanometer (10-9 meters).

Early diagnosis and targeted drug delivery for cancer
• Biomedical instrumentation
• Surgery
• Pharmacokinetics
• Monitoring of diabetes
• Health Care

Micro Swimming Robots
A truly micro scale (characteristic length of the robot doesn't exceed 100 um) swimming robot

Benefits: We envision this robot having the capability to swim to inaccessible areas in human body and perform complicated user directed tasks such as diagnosis of diseases at early stages and targeted drug delivery.

Weather forecasting
Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a future time and a given location. IT has played an important role in this field. A major part of modern weather forecasting is the severe weather alerts and advisories which the national weather services issue in the case that severe or hazardous weather is expected. This is done to protect life and property. Some of the most commonly known of severe weather advisories are the severe thunderstorm and tornado warning, as well as the severe thunderstorm etc.

E-commerce
Electronic Commerce, commonly known as (electronic marketing) e-commerce or eCommerce, consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks.E commerce has grown into one of the most feasible ways to establish a market presence.

Some common applications related to electronic commerce are the following:
• Email
E-mail was widely accepted by the business community as the first broad electronic communication medium and was the first ‘e-revolution’ in business communication. E-mail is very simple to understand. It not only allows the business user to download mail when offline, it also provides the small business user to have multiple users e-mail ID's with just one e-mail connection.
• Instant messaging
Instant messaging (IM) is a form of real-time communication between two or more people based on typed text.

primary functions are:
Quick questions and clarifications
Coordinating and scheduling tasks
Coordinating impromptu social meetings
Keeping in touch with friends and family

• Online shopping and order tracking
Online shopping is the process consumers go through to purchase products or services over the Internet.
Online stores are usually available 24 hours a day, and many consumers have Internet access both at work and at home.
Some online stores provide or link to supplemental product information, such as instructions, safety procedures, demonstrations, or manufacturer specifications
Some stores even allow customers to comment or rate their items.
One advantage of shopping online is being able to quickly seek out deals for items or services with many different vendors

• Electronic tickets
An electronic ticket or e-ticket is used to represent the purchase of a seat on a passenger airline, usually through a website or by telephone.
Once a reservation is made, an e-ticket exists only as a digital record in the airline computers.
Electronic tickets have been introduced in road, urban or rail public transport as well.

3G TECHNOLOGY
International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000), better known as 3G or 3rd Generation, is a family of standards for wireless communications defined by the International Telecommunication Union, which includes GSM EDGE, UMTS, and CDMA2000 as well as DECT and WiMAX.
The networks of 3G allows you to browse quickly through web pages, watch on-demand video programs, download and play music, videos and 3D games, watch streaming videos and music videos and have a video conference with others located on the other side of the plant.

NAVIGATION SYSTEM
An automotive navigation system is a satellite navigation system designed for use in automobiles. It typically uses a GPS navigation device to acquire position data to locate the user on a road in the unit's map database. Using the road database, the unit can give directions to other locations along roads also in its database.
The color LCD screens on some automotive navigation systems can also be used to display television broadcasts or DVD movies.
A few systems integrate (or communicate) with mobile phones for hands-free talking and SMS messaging (i.e., using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi).
Automotive navigation systems can include personal information management for meetings, which can be combined with a traffic and public transport information system.
