HOW TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS

Dear friends,

A story goes like this…….A group of frogs were traveling the woods and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.

The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. He jumped even harder and finally mad it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, “Did you not hear us?” The frog told them that he was deaf and he thought that they were encouraging him and accompanying him in his efforts to jump up out of the pit. The story teaches two things: There is power of life and death in the tongue and secondly, an encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up.

An encouraging word to students who are in the process of being educated and accompanying them in their efforts can go such a long way to achieve their aim in life. In my opinion, accompanying students in schools or positively encouraging them to study is the need of the hour and it is one of the ways of improving the quality of education in schools today. For this, the positive role model is a caring teacher and today’s teachers, more than before, are called to do that.

The relationship between student and teacher is a vital aspect in student achievement. Today being successful with students requires more than a mastery of subject and communication skills, we, the teachers, need to accompany them in their studies. To improve the quality of education in schools, it is a must that we the teachers accompany them. It is only in accompanying them in their growth process that they see themselves blooming and learn to face life with its challenges. The question that one may raise is in what ways the students can be accompanied by the teachers or in what ways the students can be helped to handle their studies effectively. I enumerate a few ways of accompanying the students so that the quality of education they receive may be enhanced

  1. Focusing on the positive side of students

In every class there are students of different background and abilities. The teacher recognizes these individual differences by letting them know that they are different and that everyone has the capacity for making positive and valuable contributions to the learning process.

  1. Communicate warmth

Normally students do not care how much teachers know until they know how much the care for them. Show them explicitly that you care for them and that you are concerned about their life and their success. Communicate interest and caring to all students both verbally and nonverbally by loving them unconditionally.

  1. Express support

Use actions to establish support rather than wield power over the students. Support is the action that breaks down all walls and barriers. When students are experiencing success, be the first to celebrate it and help them relish the same.

  1. Demonstrate commitment for students’ success

Students should experience our commitment to their success. We want them to know that we will do anything in our power to make success for them possible. This calls for transcending our good intentions. We must be willing to keep trying when all is not going as planned. Make efforts to build students’ sense of competence, autonomy and interrelatedness within the classroom.

  1. Think big for students

Teachers should hold high but realistic expectations for student learning and their own instructional practices. This means that the teacher should set high standards for learning and let them know that they are expected to meet those standards. These standards should be both challenging and attainable.

  1. Support the underperformers

First and foremost, the underperformers should be identified by the teachers and accompanied by them with a sense of direction and commitment. They should be given undivided attention and necessary help needed to perform at acceptable level. This includes giving them learning materials, communicating warmth and affection and particularly teaching them again and again until they attain basic understanding and skills.

  1. Challenge students

The teachers should challenge their students but before doing that, the teachers need to be competent enough to do that. We need to know the subject well as well as the students. Let the students be challenged by our instruction in the classroom. Let the students be challenged by our very life we live. Let our life be an open book. In short, what we say and do should be a source of inspiration to them.

  1. Monitor students’ progress

In your efforts to help students achieve high standards, try to emphasize the importance of concentration, focus and persistent effort. Enable the students to build their study skills and self-regulation strategies for managing emotions in the face of learning challenges. Encourage students to develop a sense of responsibility and self-reliance. Help students to see connection between their efforts and the results of their efforts.

  1. Conduct diagnostic Test

A diagnostic test covering knowledge and skills will help the teachers identify those students who need extra help. Once this is done, then the deficiencies found in the students should be addressed and the students can be helped to overcome the same. Besides that, meet those students whose preparation is inadequate and assign them special problem sets on a regular basis.

Having enumerated the ways of accompanying the students in their growth process, let me conclude this article with the words of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam “The best role model for a child up to 15, as discussed in my book (ignited minds), is the mother, father and elementary high school teacher. This is the time when parents have to find time to nurture the child. It is also very important that the child gets a good teacher who will enhance the knowledge and value system “Today’s teachers are role models for students. They are not mere instructional experts as a sage on the stage, rather with teaching expertise: they are guides at the side of students, accompanying them in their growth process.
